Gudmundur Johannsson (Sweden)

Professor of Endocrinology, Deputy Dean and Honorary Consultant at the Department of Endocrinology at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Gothenburg, Sweden

Gudmundur Johannsson is a Professor of Endocrinology and Deputy Dean at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg and an Honorary Consultant at the Department of Endocrinology at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Gothenburg, Sweden.


Professor Johannsson received his medical degree from the University of Iceland, Reykjavik, Iceland, and training in internal medicine and clinical endocrinology at Sahlgrenska University Hospital.


He defended his thesis, which focused on growth hormone replacement in adults with hypopituitarism, in 1997. In 2003 he became a Senior Lecturer and progressed to Professor of Endocrinology in 2010, all at the Sahlgrenska Academy. He was head of Department of Endocrinology at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital between 2000 and 2011 and Co-Director, Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition, Institute of Medicine, 2015-2018, and Deputy Head Institute of Medicine, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, 2018-2023. He was a Visiting Professor at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, from 2001 to 2003.


Professor Johannsson's major research interests include pituitary and adrenal diseases. He is past president of the Growth Hormone Research Society, board member of the Pituitary Society, member of the steering committee of European Reference Network on Rare Endocrine Conditions, and serves on the Editorial Board of several international scientific journals. Professor Johannsson has more than 300 publications in peer-reviewed journals.
